Freedom From
Food Insecurity
Dear Supporters of Toco Hills Community Alliance,
On this, its fourth anniversary as a recognized national holiday, we are wishing everyone a Happy Juneteenth! It is the 158th anniversary of Juneteenth, as it was first celebrated in Texas on June 19, 1866 to commemorate the end of slavery and enslaved people first learning of the Emancipation Proclamation.
For us here at Toco Hills Community Alliance, we will remain open this Juneteenth, recognizing the importance of this holiday, in a country where Black communities are more likely to face hunger. In fact, in 2022, Black people in the United States experienced food insecurity at almost two-and-a-half times the rate of white people.
On this day to celebrate freedom, we continue our work toward a community and a world that is free from food insecurity, where people have convenient, consistent, reliable, and equitable access to enough healthy food for their entire family to lead active lives.
In a recent survey of neighbors who come to us for services,
* 73% reported that after receiving food from us, their family would not be as worried about money, and
* 85% reported that they would have more money to use on other needs, like housing and medical care.
With your help, we are truly making a positive difference in the lives of those we serve and in our community.
We are continuing to serve staggering numbers of our neighbors, averaging almost 700 families served each week, the majority of them people of color, who face structural inequalities that make it more difficult to afford food and pay for other basic needs. Yet, because of you and your continued generosity, together, we are making progress in our work for freedom from food insecurity.
More than ever, we need you and your support in the work. Your dedication to freedom and equity and your engagement is crucial. Together, our efforts create meaningful change as we strive to embody what it means to be Neighbors Helping Neighbors.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Rev. Dr. Lisa Heilig,
Executive Director
