We Are Stronger...
Because of Our Board
Dedicated. Committed. Full of heart. Hard-working. Fun-loving? YES!
All of these describe the Board of Directors of Toco Hills Community Alliance. Currently comprised of 14 members, many of whom represent our Sustaining Partners, but some of whom come from the wider community, they are charged with the responsibility of governing THCA – setting the strategic direction, ensuring legal compliance, and making certain that we have the resources we need for our mission.
That sounds a little dry, but this incredible group of humans bring such a sense of enthusiasm and passion to their work, it is anything but.
While they leave the day to day operations to me as Executive Director, this Board is deeply engaged. In fact, over half of the Board volunteers at THCA regularly, and every one of them has volunteered at least once! They truly embody our mission of Neighbors Helping Neighbors, even while working to ensure the vitality of the organization.
Without them and their expertise and time and care and accountability, THCA would not be where it is today. We would not have been able to
- triple the number of families served in the last five years or
- be able to share over a million pounds of food in a year or
- partner with DoorDash to deliver over 11,000 boxes of food or
- coordinate at least one Mobile Food Pantry a month.
So, HUGE thanks to all of the THCA Board of Directors:
It has been said that to function properly, a nonprofit organization like THCA needs the Executive Director and the President of the Board to function as two wings of a plane. We are very fortunate that the President of our Board of Directors, Bob Watson, is a great wing man, helping our plane to stay steady and on course, even through the bumps.
For some 30 years, Bob was Executive Director of another nonprofit before retiring. Like so many, though, he has been a quite active retiree. In addition to being President, he volunteers every week in kitchen. He also officiates volleyball and enjoys being a grandfather. In addition, he is active in his church, Central Congregational United Church of Christ, one of THCA’s original Sustaining Partners. It was there that he learned about THCA, and that a few years ago, someone there mentioned he would be great for the THCA Board. He soon joined the Board and soon thereafter spearheaded our very first Annual Campaign. When it was time for a President to be elected, it was unanimous!
Since then, he’s been instrumental in helping THCA navigate COVID, grow our Board, and develop a long-range plan. On a personal note, he has been an invaluable support and incredible thought partner.
And, every year, along with Evelyn Brewer, our other Board Member from Central Congregational UCC, he helps to coordinate their church’s annual fundraiser for THCA. The fundraiser has taken different forms – a sit-down dinner, a tailgate party, and this year, a brunch.
The entire community is invited to join in for good food, good music, good company, and good fun for a good cause – supporting THCA.

We are truly stronger because of our Board.
I hope you have had a chance to follow along with our social media – Facebook and Instagram, where we have highlighted some of our wonderful community partners, and that you had a chance to read our last email highlighting our incredible staff.
It takes our community partners, staff, Board, volunteers, and YOU to take on food insecurity in our neighborhood.
THANK YOU for being part of our community and part of our team.
THANK YOU for being Neighbors Helping Neighbors – senior citizens, disabled veterans, working families, unhoused and more –
who find not just food here, but hope.
Working together, we are making sure that Hope Is Stronger Than Hunger.
One other way to help out Toco Hills Community Alliance is to donate specific items
that are needed; you could even coordinate
a drive at your school, work,or neighborhood!
Many of you have inquired if the government shutdown thas had an effect on us here at THCA. It doesn’t seem that it has yet. However, should the shutdown continue through to next month, Georgia has confirmed that they will not issue SNAP or WIC benefits in November until the government reopens. In addition, some 80,000 federal workers in Georgia will not receive their paychecks until a reopening.
So, while we have not yet seen the effects, the potential for a huge crisis is looming over us right now. We will, as always, do the best we can for our neighbors. There is no doubt that, if it comes to that, we will need your support more than ever. No one should go hungry. You believe that, and you can help to make sure it doesn’t happen in our neighborhood.
Thank you for your concern and your steadfast support.
