Dear Supporter of Toco Hills Community Alliance,
The last few years for Toco Hills Community Alliance, for our community, for our world, really, have been filled with a remarkable amount of uncertainty, confusion, change, and many challenges. Through it all - COVID, supply chain issues, inflation - THCA has continued to fight food insecurity in our neighborhood. This has only been possible because our community has been with us all the way.
Because of your support, in 2022,
- we served 14,632 households,
- with 39,685 people in them,
In other words, we served nearly 40,000 people with almost a million
pounds of groceries!
Each family received an average of 63 pounds of groceries each
week, which includes fresh produce, meat, fresh bread, and most
often, fresh dairy, as well as canned goods and staples.
In addition to groceries, we shared:
- 4,262 hot meals with our unhoused friends
- 505 hygiene kits
- 22,404 articles of clothing
All of it only possible because of your support – each and every oneof you, whether you gave $10,000 or $10, if you spearheaded a
massive drive or gave a few cans or supplies, if you volunteered
regularly or sent well wishes whenever you could. All of that support
added up, so that, together, we made, and are continuing to make, a
positive impact in our community and the world.
There is no way to know what 2023 will hold, but it seems likely the need will continue to be great, and that the need will continue to grow, as prices continue to stay high and income stagnant. We experienced a 50% increase in services over the year, and in the last 3 months of 2022, 25% of those coming were new. So, the trend is definitely upward. And, even though the vast majority of those coming have income, it just cannot keep up with covering the rising costs of necessities like rent and medicine and gas. So, by providing healthy groceries that supply most of a family’s needs for a week, we are providing them some breathing room, and quite possibly, keeping families out of crisis. For these families, for those to come, we press forward into 2023 to provide food and hope and breathing room, in a community of welcome and hospitality. Whatever happens as the year unfolds, with your support, we will, as Martin Luther King, urges us, keep moving forward to embody together what it means to be Neighbors Helping Neighbors.
will not ask you to fly, we do want to ask you to run or walk with us in the 2023 Hunger Walk Run to fight food insecurity. As many of our long-time supporters know, our participation in the Atlanta Community Food Bank Hunger Walk is one of the primary ways we are able to fund our food purchases throughout the year.
Team THCA has been formed and you are invited to be on the team. Because of the incredible support of this community, last year, our team was in the top 5 teams for fundraising – let’s do it again! This is a great project for a school, a business, a neighborhood group because many people giving even small amounts adds up. And, in fact, you can form your own team and designate the proceeds to go to Toco Hills Community Alliance.
For all of the information, go to http://engage.acfb.org/goto/TeamTHCA Join the team and invite others to support you on your walk, or give to Team THCA, or even form your own team for THCA. Your support made a positive difference last year and it will continue to do so this new year in ways we may not even imagine yet.
Together, let’s keep moving forward. Thank you for continuing to be on our team.
Rev. Dr. Lisa Heilig, Executive Director
